Laura,

I reported this 6 weeks ago for the first time, and there are a number of people who have commented on some solutions.

I have also been reporting that it is possible that China may shut a significant amount of manufacturing down for the Olympics, and transportation as well. so, hopefully you will get this message out as well as it may create significant headaches for more than a few business travelers.

Hi Kristen,

I find this news story quite interesting, and as I posted at Jill Stanek's site, I have a hard time believing this will change anytime soon.

More important than the fact that this topic seems to be publicly debated once a year anyway, where this is particularly interesting is that they just kicked a large number of cadres out of the party because of their extra children. Perhaps there were other reasons for this, but none-the-less I think the timing indicates that no real change will occur.

With that being said, if it ends up on the March NPC, then perhaps there is some meat to the story and change is coming.

Have a good weekend

[...] Danwei to danwei: Get lost! Known best for his efforts at Danwei, Jeremy Goldkorn has shared some of his nuggets of knowledge on the AMCHAM daily website. Having experience partner discussions 4 separate times over the last 2 years, I share many of Jeremy’s thoughts. however, I think a few more need to be added. Like, if you are going to partner with someone or another entity, make sure you are clear about roles, responsibilities, capabilities, and expectations…. more often than not, where I have seen partnerships go bad it is because something got lost in one of those four areas.
It's interesting to see that Jeremy is discouraging the JV. In the early days they were the only option, and then there were so many horror stories of foreigners investors losing the shirts off their back, like the collection of these mishaps in 'Mr. China.' However, my understanding was that in the last couple of years, with a more mature Chinese business community, there were more reliable opportunities.

Is it still really that dangerous to look into JV's, or is it now a feasible option? It seems like always going the WOFE route could be fairly limiting.

I'm living in Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, and have recently heard some disturbing news. A few weeks ago one of my foreign friends applying for a year visa was granted a visa only until the 15th of July. Upon enquiring as to why he was not granted a year visa, he was told that all foreigners had to leave China before July 15th unless they were participating in or attending the Olympics. I thought this to be rather strange (how many hundreds of thousands of foreigners live in China now? do we all have to go?) so I contacted a friend in a different city who had also just applied for a visa. He thought the story was funny and was certain that it was a joke until he looked at his and his employee's visa and discovered that they too had only been granted visas until the 15th of July. He went to the his local PSB and was given the same story. Then today some other friends came over and they told me that at a Christmas dinner they were attending there was a table from the PSB who came over and told them that they had to leave before the 15th of July too. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is this unique to Inner Mongolia?

To be followed up I hope. I meet many foreigners who were told - holding a "residence permit" - they had indeed to re-register every time. I think this is not correct nor legal but try explaining that to your local police office! Anyway, I won't do it.
